Chapter 15

Airplanes always made me sleepy. I was thankful for that. While some people were panicking or drinking to keep from panicking, I fought the urge to zonk out until we were in the air.

Sleeping on a plane isn’t uncommon or particularly embarrassing, but it was when I was on an hour and a half flight in the middle of the day. I’d left Cal in Baltimore to go see my family in New York City. But that didn’t stop me.

I wasn’t even wearing comfortable clothing. Because I had become such a recognizable person, and I didn’t particularly like seeing myself online or on the cover of a paper or magazine looking less than stellar. I wore one of my conservative, high neckline, low hemline, black dresses with a full face of makeup and hair sprayed to perfection.

Dead set on sticking to my old habits, I settled into my seat and the next thing I knew I was being jostled awake by the landing gear coming out.

If I ever started suffering from insomnia, all I would have to do is take a flight somewhere and I would be fine.

With my earbuds in my ears and a burly bodyguard with a marine haircut at my side, I walked down the terminal listening to my Welcome to New York playlist. So many great songs were written about the city, and I thought I was endlessly funny when I’d listen to them while making the trip home. And I hadn’t been home in so long, the playlist felt necessary.

We moved through the crowded airport on a mission to get through baggage claim as quickly as possible, and my excitement grew with every step. Phone calls, texts, and video calls could only do so much. Being with the people you love in person couldn’t be topped.

Marcus, my bodyguard, and I stood at the luggage carousel just waiting for my slightly ridiculous amount of bags when there was a quick charging movement from my right. One second I was standing there, minding my own business, and the next I was shoved up against the wall with a mountain of Marcus in front of me.

My blood rushed in my ears. I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew it was something terrible. Marcus had me safely tucked behind him, and I knew he’d keep me safe, but someone was trying to attack me.

“Let go of me, now,” a familiar voice called out. “That’s my sister.”

My fear calmed and constant little sister state of annoyance took over.

I poked my head out from behind Marcus’s elbow to see Antonio squirming in pain. Marcus held his arm in some kind of locked position I assumed only bodyguards knew.

“It’s okay. He’s telling the truth. That’s my brother.” I pushed out from behind Marcus as he let him go.

Alessandro stood just behind Antonio, of course, the twins came together. His mouth hung slack and he loosely grasped a sign in his hands that welcomed me back home in crudely drawn bubble letters.
